Common questions about anxiety & mood disorders.
How do I know if I have an anxiety disorder or just normal stress?
Normal stress is usually tied to a specific event and resolves once the situation passes. An anxiety disorder involves persistent, excessive worry or fear that interferes with your daily activities, sleep, and relationships, even when there is no immediate threat.
Is depression just a chemical imbalance in the brain?
While neurotransmitter imbalances play a significant role in depression, it is widely recognized as a complex condition influenced by biological, psychological, and environmental factors. This is why a combined approach of medication and therapy is often the most effective treatment.
Can panic attacks be cured completely?
Yes, with the right combination of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and, if necessary, medication, the frequency and severity of panic attacks can be drastically reduced. Many patients learn to manage and eventually eliminate panic attacks entirely by understanding and controlling their body’s fear response.
What is the first step in treating Bipolar Disorder?
The first and most crucial step is obtaining an accurate clinical diagnosis, as bipolar disorder requires different medication than standard depression. Treatment typically begins with mood-stabilizing medications to balance emotional extremes, followed by ongoing psychotherapy.
Do I have to take medication for OCD?
Not always, though it is often highly beneficial. The gold standard treatment for OCD is a specific therapy called Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). However, depending on the severity of the symptoms, psychiatric medication may be prescribed to reduce the intensity of the obsessions, making the therapy more manageable.
